Allegri cites ‘technical choice’ in El Shaarawy drop

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri explained his reasons for dropping Stephan El Shaarawy against Napoli, citing it as a ‘technical choice’.

Eye brows were raised when it was confirmed that Il Faraone was benched from the starting line-up in the 1-1 draw to Napoli on Sunday evening, especially given Mario Balotelli’s suspension.

The match was crucial in keeping Milan’s hopes of avoiding the play-offs for the Champions League and Allegri believes he needed someone with different attributes for the game.

“I made a technical choice. I believe I needed a player with different skills compared to Stephan El Shaarawy- that is why I substituted him with Robinho,” he said after the game.

“Nobody can play an entire season at the top level. In the last few rounds he had dipped in psychological terms.

“He is only 20 years old and has already scored many goals, which is precisely why he needs to be dealt with in the best way possible. Those who replaced him did very well tonight. Robinho played a good game and can be of great use to us for the rest of the season, as he is a champion.”
