The magical powers of bitter kola

Doctors say the nut is an antibiotic and can also improve the lungs

Medical experts have advised Nigerians to regularly eat bitter kola, as it is a potent antibiotic, which could be effective in the treatment of many ailments and infections.

Bartholomew Brai, the Nutritional Biochemist at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, said on Thursday that bitter kola was used in the preparation of herbal drugs either as nourishment, supplement or herbal remedy.

“If a patient on medication chews bitter kola, it will make the drugs ineffective; aside this, I do not think bitter kola has any other side effect,” he said. “Bitter kola has lots of health benefits, like the treatment of cough, sneezing, cold, diarrhea, tuberculosis, bacterial infection and fever. It improves lungs function by expanding the alveolar ducts and sac in the lungs thereby improving and strengthening the fibres in the lung tissue.”

He said that there was no recorded side effect to the regular intake of bitter kola, adding that it was all round medicinal.

Emeka Amaechi, a general physician, said that bitter kola had chemical compounds that could help the breakdown of glycogen in the liver. “Bitter kola has antioxidant properties used as tonic for the liver and the gall bladder, which helps detoxifies the body system,” he said. “It clears the voice by stimulating the production of mucus along the lining of the vocal tube which softens the dry throat.”

He also said that bitter kola was anti-poison. According to him, when food is suspected to be contaminated by bacteria, chewing of bitter kola will prevent the development of any infection or poison.

“It also reduces eye pressure and relieves arthritis by reducing swelling, pain and increase joint movement,” he said.

Bitter kola is another type of kola found in parts of Nigeria. Its biological name is ‘Garcinia Kola’ and it belongs to the family of ‘Guittiferal’.

This is so true about the bitter kola. I sing and for a long time I couldn't sing on my regular Key. To sing on even lower keys was a struggle and I wondered what to do. I remembered someone once said bitter kola clears the voice though I ignored then, I decided to give it a try. Not pleasurable at first but I bore the bitterness and within that week, it was as though my voice just opened up. Now I'm enjoying my singing and have made Orogbo part of my diet.

This reminds me of a guy who is a copycat but funny enough, he copies both the matric no and name of the person he is copying from. Hw can he deny that he didn't copy this work, since the voice is that of Jacob and the body Esau's.
Bros, person wey take him hand bury himsef, must surely have one hand exposed.

d info is vry correct bt d pix is wrong

By using a picture of a kola nut when talking about bitter kola you are misinforming people who don't know better. I don't actually know anything about bitter cola, but I know a lot about kola nuts. They deserve to be introduced properly. They can be chewed to release energy and hold back thirst and hunger, and yes they are also bitter. If you can stand the bitter for a few minutes the taste will get better. When grated green (not dried)and cooked (not just steeped)with milk and sugar they are delicious. You can grate the dry nuts also,or grate them and let them dry, and you still get a nice tasting drink that can take care of food poisoning & many other things. But the AWESOME benefits of cooking the gratings within minutes would require pages of notes. The anti-inflammatory qualities are phenomenal. I have MS and stifled every attack for the 10 years I lived in a region where I could get the green nuts. It can be a life-changing aid. But do NOT confuse this with bittger kola.

Wat a contradiction.are we talking abt bitter kola or kola nut.

I agree with u!!

I eat a lot of bitter cola, close to 10 pieces every week and I feel ok. No side effects

when i saw it, i thought that another name for cola nut is bitter cola.

Bitter cola is highly medicinal, I chew it twice a week.

be sure of what u want to post next time...stop giving us headache, so that we wont think our eyes are decieving us

Na wao, the thing tire me ooo! I was almost getting confused discovering that the content of the write-up is different from the photo above......Its a bloody mistake. let those concerned make ammends immediately pls!
Tnx!

I was going to say the same thing. The picture displayed is of Kola Nut and NOT Bitter Kola. Bitter Kola is brown on the outside, oval shaped and white on the inside.
