The legendary Super Eagles striker has died aged 49
Rashid Yekini celebrates scoring Nigeria's first ever World Cup goal

Two-time African footballer of the year, Rashidi Yekini is dead.

Yekini was born in Kaduna in 1963. After starting his professional career in the Nigerian league, he moved to the Ivory Coast to play for Africa Sports. From there he went to Portugal and Vitoria de Setubal, where he experienced his most memorable years, eventually becoming the Portuguese first division's top scorer, in the 1993–94 season with 34 goals in 32 matches.

His performances in the Nigerian shirt that season (our first World Cup participation and most recent Nations Cup win happened then) earned him the title of African Footballer of the Year in 1993, the first ever Nigerian player to win it.

After the 1994 World Cuo, Yekini moved to Olympiakos FC in Greece, but failed to get going, so left. His career never really got back on track, not even upon a return to Setúbal, which happened after another unassuming spell, in La Liga with Sporting de Gijon. He successively played with FC Zürich, Club Atletique Bizertin and Al-Shabab Riyadh, before rejoining Africa Sports.

In 2003, at 39, he returned to the Nigerian league with Julius Berger FC. In 2005, 41-year old Yekini made a short comeback, playing for Gateway FC.

Rashid Yekini, who had been divorced since 1994 lived a solitary life with a few tenants in his house in Ibadan, Oyo State where it is reported that he rarely received visitors.

Yekini was 49 years old. He is survived by two kids. He will be buried tomorrow according to Muslim rites in Irah, Kwara State.

RIP may gud luv u most

Even though I was only 8 years during the 1994 world cup, I can't forget the name Rashid Yekini because Yekini outstanding performance and his superb goal he used to demoralize Bulgarians still rings louder in my memory. As bereaved people, it is also disheartening that Nigeria has not produced an outstanding striker like Yekini. That makes Yekini unique in the history of Nigerian football. Yekini may your gentle soul rest in peace

Rashidi, your skill lights up the field when you where on it! Many remember the first goal for Nigeria in the world cup, but I will never forget your goal against spain supplied by Okacha from the half way line in 98. God bless you eternally memories of you and what you added to our lives through football will stay with me till my dying day and though you walk this earth no more I will always speak your name when talking about Nigerian football, give our love to Okafor.

May rashid yekin's soul rest eternal peace. A great Historical African goal machine scorer is gone. RIP Yakin May God bless his soul. What a great goal scorer he was.

a rebels who fought Nigeria ws buried like a legend, lets see hw Yekini who stood in 4 Nigeria as a hero will b buried. Yekini, may ur soul rest in peace

@st.Osmo..! ...guy,or whatever, you are just an obligate idiot! Go die a miserable death! That legend fought for something. What are you fight for? Perhaps, ignorance!

Can you be decent enough to compare oranges with oranges and pears with pears. A legend is a legend even in death and a stander-by is a stander-by even in death. You cannot compare what you do not know. Be wise and mind your words.

The curtain finally drawn to the once illustrious sporting personality who launched our futball to global stardom. May his soul rest in peace

This is a sad day for Nigerian football, may his soul rest in peace.

May his departed soul of Gangling Rasheed Yekini rest in Perfect Peace. Nigerian football lovers will you and your memorable 1st Nigerian World Cup goal. Adieu Rasheed Yekini
