Washington-based journal, Foreign Policy lauds Nigeria's Finance Minister as a champion for continental economic renaissance

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been named one of 100 Global Thinkers by the iconic Washington-based journal, Foreign Policy.

Paul Nwabuikwu, Special Assistant on Communication to the minister, said Okonjo-Iweala was honoured alongside a group of distinguished activists, political leaders, diplomats and entrepreneurs from across the world.

Single Tenure proposal was misunderstood - Jonathan

Says proposal was anchored on the need for incumbent presidents to focus on the execution of development programmes, instead of re-election issues

President Goodluck Jonathan has said his proposed seven-year single tenure for those occupying the office of the Nigerian President had been misunderstood by those who said he wanted to add that term to his current one. 

The President disclosed this to the French Foreign Minister, Alain Juppe, who visited the State House on Saturday as part of the activities of his visit to Nigeria.

New York prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss sexual assault charges against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Monday, a stunning reversal that could revive the political future of a man many had seen as the next president of France.

Prosecutors gave up hope they could convict Strauss-Kahn after losing faith in their star witness, Nafissatou Diallo, 32, a hotel maid from Guinea who alleged that Strauss-Kahn emerged naked from the bathroom of his luxury suite on May 14 and forced her to perform oral sex.

France pledges support for Nigeria

The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to supporting democratic rule and good governance.

France has pledged its support for Nigeria's aspirations in the international arena, including her quest for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

The pledge was made during a meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, on the sidelines of the inauguration of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara,in Ivory Coast.

Sarkozy also commended Jonathan for the role he played as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) to help restore the democratically elected government of Ouattara.

While Socialists have lamented the lightning downfall of the runaway favourite to win the 2012 presidential election; National Front leader, Marine Le Pen, has huffed that it was an accident waiting to happen.

He has also instructed his ministers to keep quiet about the charges by a New York hotel maid that Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her.

A hotel maid, Nafissatou Diallo, who says IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her was due to testify before a New York grand jury on Wednesday.

A lawyer for the 32-year-old African widow dismissed a suggestion by Strauss-Kahn's defense counsel that the incident at the luxury Times Square Sofitel last Saturday might not have been a sexual assault.
