The coordinator of a community based programme urged the state governments to contribute their quota to ongoing IFAD-assisted projects

The IFAD-assisted Community-Based Natural Resource Management Programme (CBNRMP) has called on governors of the nine Niger Delta states to pay their counterpart funds promptly, to enable the programme to achieve its goal.

The National Programme Coordinator, Irene Jumbo-Ibeakuzie, said that the non-payment of counterpart funds by some of the states was jeopardising the effective implementation of the programme.

The affected states are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers.

Mob sets The Nation Newspapers van ablaze

Thousands of copies of the newspaper were razed in an ambush by suspected militants.

Suspected militants, on Monday, set ablaze a distribution van belonging to The Nation Newspapers at the Mbiama axis of the East-West Road on the boundary between Rivers and Bayelsa states.

Former Deputy Governor publishes book

Ekpotu, of Akwa Ibom State, proffered solutions to the Niger Delta crisis in his new book

The immediate past deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State, Patrick Akpan Ekpotu has spelt out ways to permanently end the troubles in the Niger Delta, in his new book, 'Lifting the Perils'.

According to him, adequate attention, a sense of belonging and joint control of the resources derived from the area would help put an end to the recurrent crisis.

Youth protest in Port Harcourt

The youths took to the streets because of what they perceive as the SGF's incapacitation of the NDDC.

Traffic along Aba Road in Port Harcourt was held up for hours on Saturday as hundreds of youths blocked the road in protest at what is to them, the incapacitation of the Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mrs. Osato Iyasere.

Crime does pay

At the end of the day, the dangerous message that the Nigerian state is sending is that crime does indeed pay.

A few days ago, the federal government announced the approval of a “Transitional Safety Allowance” for ex-Niger Delta militants. This is separate, and in addition to, the N65,000 that each militant has been collecting monthly since the start of the amnesty programme, and separate from the foreign excursions that these militants have been undertaking since the beginning of said programme.

FG acquires 12 gunboats

The vessels are expected to boost security on the inland waterways

The federal government has acquired 12 gunboats, at a cost of $4.9 million (about N750 million), to enhance the safety of the country’s inland waterways.

Aminu Yar’Adua, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), disclosed this on Friday in Lokoja. He said the gunboats, which were imported from Malaysia, would be deployed in the area offices of the authority.

FG sends 24 ex-militants to US

Over 1,500 Militants are agitating for admission in to the amnesty programme.

The Federal Government, on Sunday, sent 24 ex-militants to the United States of America for vocational training in recognition of the amnesty programme.

The programme started in August 6, 2009 and ended in October 9, 2009 under the administration of late President Umaru Yar'Adua.

It was introduced in the oil-rich Niger Delta region in a bid to end serious unrest as militants were expected to surrender their weapons and renounce militancy.

Militant group surrenders

Following reports that the wanted leader of militant group in the Niger Delta, John Togo was killed in the wee hours of Monday during a gun fight in the creeks of Delta State between his fighters and troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), his Niger-Delta Liberation Force (NDLF) has issued a statement alerting government of its intention to surrender.

But the JTF through its spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Antigha has said the rumour of his death and the group’s move to ‘surrender’ may be a ploy by the militant leader to get some break to regroup.

Troops destroy 500 illegal refineries in Niger Delta

Nigeria's military said it destroyed 500 illicit oil refineries dotted along the creeks of the southern Niger Delta in a six-hour raid over the weekend.

About 100 troops backed by gunboats and helicopters flattened the makeshift refineries in the Mbiama area located in a key oil-producing state of Bayelsa, Tinothy Antigha told Associated Press.

"There were over 500 illegal refineries within the area the size of eight football fields," he said.
